What is Podcasting?

Podcasting combines the terms iPod and broadcasting to describe audio content delivered through the Internet that can be downloaded and played on your desktop or transferred to a portable MP3 player (like an iPod) so you can listen offline. Receiving a podcast entails downloading podcasting software and then subscribing to an RSS feed that includes the MP3 audio file to be played. (Most podcasting software is free; some require a fee.) Once you subscribe, your computer will automatically download the audio files every time a new podcast is available.

In the case of this website, podcasts consist of MP3 audio interviews; the podcast is updated whenever new ones are posted. These interviews are also accessible "live" on each Issues page (Globalization, Environment, etc.).

What equipment do I need?

The basic requirements for podcasting are a computer (PC or Mac), podcasting software (see list of software below), a software MP3 player (see Audio Help & Player Downloads for list), and an Internet connection. For portability, an iPod or other physical MP3 player is needed.

Subscribing to a Podcast

Simply download and install podcasting software (list below) onto your computer. To subscribe to the CarolynCrane.net podcast, copy the podcasting link URL above into your podcast software. Although applications vary, each should provide instructions on how to add podcast feeds to your list. Then, just check for the new podcasts (interview MP3s) that will be on your computer and, if you are set up, on your MP3 player.

A Partial List of Podcasting Software

  • iTunes (PC or Mac)
  • iPodder (PC)
  • Doppler (PC)
  • iPodderX (Mac)
  • Playpod (Mac)
  • NetNewsWire (Mac)

CarolynCrane.net cannot offer specific tech support on the operation of your podcast software. However, each of the software links above also has FAQ's and instructions on how to use that podcast client. If you feel there is a problem with the feed itself or this site, please email the Web Diva.
